Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the completion of an inpatient alcohol treatment program and an abstinence period of patients with alcohol dependence.
Methods: A total of 73 patients who were diagnosed as alcohol dependence according to the DSM-IV and had
participated in an abstinence based 5-week inpatient alcohol treatment program at the Hallym University Hangang Sacred
Heart Hospital from 2009 to 2012 were retrospectively selected. Sociodemographic factors (sex, age, marital status, etc.) and clinical data (onset age of problematic drinking, family history of alcohol use disorder, comorbid psychiatric disorders, etc.) were collected by reviewing medical records. At six months after discharge, the duration of abstinence was compared between the program completion group and the incompletion group.
Results: Compared to the incompletion group, the completion group showed a statistically significant longer abstinence period (2.37 vs. 0.63 months, p=0.01) and higher abstinence rate (23.9% vs. 3.7%, p=0.025) at 6 months after discharge.
Conclusion: These results suggest that the planned discharge after the completion of an inpatient alcohol treatment program is important for a better prognosis.
